Personal Expression and Wearable Technologies FINAL PROJECT

After a rather exhaustive look at Technology and how to incorporate that into a Wearable with function, what I began to realize was that the technology that inspired me more than anything else was the technology of nature. The intelligence of nature's desig, if you will. In choosing materials I had a look at a variety of different textures, with a variety of functionalities. Broccoli was what first came to mind. as long as I have known Broccoli I have been impressed, intrigued and delighted by the structure of Broccoli. So the question is: How does one wear broccoli? The logic for this first exploration is thus: Broccoli is like a tiny tree, in a tree you can build a house, in a house you are protected and safe, therefore broccoli is. . . . .

I realize this is a rather broad assumption.

The second texture I looked at was lettuce, this is based more on it's form and it's structure than anything else. Lettuce is as much a covering as it is anything else, the fact that it is really just covering more lettuce is beside the point.

The Third I looked at was brussel sprouts, which in many ways is a combination of the two. But when it comes down to it, this picture is just sexy, if you can ignore the fact that the legs have been amputated. I see a lot of possibility here, obviously not a functional prototype but as a more personal expressive commentary.

So then I began doing research on vegitable clothing and this photo shos up. It is in no way what I was envisioning, but it does show that others are thinking in similar ways. One of the most common questions I have delt with on this project has obviously been " Why Lingerie?" and the answer has always been that I felt challenged by the confines. What really has been the most challege is to create innovation in a field which I have no prior experience, or knowledgeable history to expand upon.

So now the question is " Why Food?" As I have thought about this answer many different aspects have come up. The first and most true is that in Nature is perfection and beauty, our bodies are the same way, I feel that adorning the body with the finest jewels of nature, is a graceful moment held, as we, and the material slowly wilt away. What was interesting about the Fruit Roll-ups was that even though they are " Made with Real Fruit" There was really little change, in fact the plasticity of the product only increased over time. I have always been a proponent for natural fibers, but I think the possibility of vegitable art has some room for a Salad.

There is another aspect that has come up regarding the use of food and that is that it is something that I don't get much of, especially salad. So in many ways perhaps this project came about because I just have a massive vitamin deficiency and that is what spawned the whole project.

I don't know the direction this will take but it is sure to be an adventure.
